“1938 Population Exchange Between Turkey and Jugoslavia” in the Perspective of Compulsory Migration
Abstract
The withdrawal of the
Ottoman Empire from the Balkans has recognized the request of the nationalist
movements in the Balkans towards the establishing of nation states. In this
period, the nationalist ideology was embraced as the official ideology of many
states and was therefore seen as an appropriate tool for protecting the
national interests.
The Serbian state, just after claiming its independence from the Ottoman Empire, remaining influenced by the nationalist ideology, followed a series of fascist policy towards the Albanians and the Muslim element in general. Especially after the Balkan wars, on the way to The dream of establishing a single nation state and the Great Serbia, the Serbian State had applied slaughtering, forced assimilations, isolations, killings and migration. In fact, the Serbian state saw “migration as the most appropriate method to get Rid of the Albanians and Muslims”. After the First Balkan War the Serbian state Always practiced migration policy and that is why it has tried to apply it with different methods.
