Health Problems Experienced by Iranian Refugee Women in Van during Their Migration Processes

Öz

Purpose: Migration is the geographical movement of people from one place to another (country, city, region) with the aim of settling there permanently or temporarily, in order to spend part or all of their lives there for economic, social, political, or religious reasons. It is known that migration can occur due to war, natural disasters, or compelling circumstances, as well as for voluntary reasons such as the search for better living conditions. Migration can expose the individuals involved in this process, particularly women, to significant difficulties for social reasons. Health arising from economic and bureaucratic barriers that cannot be treated constitute a significant part of these difficulties. This study aims to understand and highlight the specific health issues faced by Iranian refugee women who have migrated to Van during their migration process. Method: To this end, in-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with 10 Iranian refugee women; the interviews were transcribed, the relevant topics were addressed, compiled, and discussed. Findings: The study concluded that Iranian women and their relatives may suffer from hernias, back surgery, diabetes, skin diseases, eye diseases, blood disorders, and physical and psychological problems arising from the violence and harassment they have experienced; whilst their conditions are generally treated when they are able to access healthcare facilities in Türkiye, it was found that they are often unable to do so. Conclusion: The study concluded that implementing measures to alleviate the bureaucratic and economic difficulties faced by migrants would enable migrant women to navigate the migration process more smoothly, and that these improvements would also make it much easier for them to overcome the other challenges they face.
