Caryl Churchill and Chaos

Abstract

Most of Caryl Churchill's plays, in which past, present and future are mixed with dreams, stage a dark and gloomy world. In this dreadful environment, it is women and children who are the most severely affected. Oppressed people do not live a desirable life, nor do they have hope for future. Governments change, revolutions and coup d’états take place, but nothing changes in the end, and expectation of a happy ending for the oppressed is perpetually postponed. We witness a world stripped of its meaning in every way. Women try to escape from the existing conditions but it is in vain. The more they struggle the worse their injuries are. Therefore, they experience various dilemmas and are involved in meaningless actions. The characters’ words and actions often contradict each other. In a patriarchal community governed with cruelty people only pursue their interests. Thus, they are either indifferent to their environment or even harm the environment. As a result, nature is damaged and ca-lamities increase. Life is full of risks and nobody is safe. Fears, ambiguities, deaths and terror have turned life into a nightmare. This article aims at drawing attention to the dreadful world encompassing us, re-vealing the dimensions of oppressions and violence.

Geçmişin, bugünün ve geleceğin hayalle karışık verildiği Caryl Churchill'in birçok oyunu karanlık ve karamsar bir dünyayı sahneler. Bu korkunç ortamda en büyük acıyı yine kadınlar ve çocuklar yaşar. Sömürülen insanların bugünü de gelecekleri de yoktur. İktidarlar değişir; devrimler, darbeler olur, ancak sonuçta durum değiştirmez ve ezilen insanlar için mutlu bir gelecek beklentisi hep ertelenir. Her açıdan anlamını yitirmiş bir dünyaya tanık oluruz. Kadınlar, mevcut durumun baskısından bilinçsizce kaçma-ya çalışırlar, ancak çırpındıkça daha büyük yaralar alırlar. Dolayısıyla çok çelişki yaşarlar ve anlamsız eylemlere girişirler. Karakterlerin söylemleri ve eylemleri sürekli çelişir. Acımasızlığın baskın olduğu ataerkil bir toplumda insanlar yalnızca çıkarlarını düşünürler. Böylece ya çevrelerine duyarsız kalırlar ya da daha ileri giderek büyük zararlar verirler. Sonuçta doğa günden güne bozulur ve felaketler artar. Yaşam risklerle doludur ve hiç kimse güvende değildir. Korkular, belirsizlikler, riskler, ölümler ve terör yaşamı kâbusa çevirmiştir. Bu makale, Churchill’in oyunlarında vurgulandığı gibi baskı ve acımasızlıkların vardığı boyutları gözler önüne sererek etrafımızı çepeçevre kuşatan kor-kunç dünyaya dikkat çekmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
