Metaverse Technologies in the Tourism Industry: A General Review of Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

Öz

The aim of this study is to examine the application areas of metaverse technologies in the tourism sector and to identify the opportunities and challenges these technologies present for tourism activities. Document analysis was employed as the data collection method, and relevant academic studies, reports, news sources, and digital materials were systematically reviewed. The findings indicate that metaverse technologies enable users to experience destinations virtually, particularly those that are physically inaccessible. Through features such as telepresence, informational support, and interactivity, tourists are able to explore destinations in advance and enhance their overall travel experience. Metaverse applications contribute to increased accessibility, support sustainable tourism practices, and strengthen intercultural interaction. However, challenges such as the digital divide, high-cost hardware requirements, data security concerns, and platform interoperability issues have also been identified. Overall, the study demonstrates that the metaverse holds significant potential as a complementary technology to traditional tourism practices and may play a central role in the digital transformation of the tourism industry.

Turizm Sektöründe Metaverse Teknolojileri: Uygulamalar, Fırsatlar ve Zorluklar Üzerine Genel Bir İnceleme

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, metaverse teknolojilerinin turizm sektöründeki uygulama alanlarını ve bu teknolojilerin sektöre sağladığı fırsatlar ile karşılaşılan zorlukları ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak doküman analizi yöntemi kullanılmış; ilgili akademik çalışmalar, raporlar, haberler ve dijital materyaller sistematik biçimde incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, metaverse teknolojilerinin kullanıcıların fiziksel olarak erişemediği destinasyonları sanal ortamda deneyimlemelerine olanak tanıdığını göstermektedir. Telepresence, bilgilendiricilik ve etkileşim özellikleri sayesinde turistler destinasyonları önceden keşfedebilmekte ve seyahat deneyimlerini zenginleştirebilmektedir. Metaverse uygulamaları erişilebilirliği artırmakta, sürdürülebilir turizmi desteklemekte ve kültürler arası etkileşimi güçlendirmektedir. Bununla birlikte, dijital bölünme, yüksek maliyetli donanım gereksinimleri, veri güvenliği sorunları ve platformlar arası uyumsuzluk önemli zorluklar olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Çalışma, metaverse’ün turizm sektöründe geleneksel uygulamaları tamamlayıcı bir teknoloji olarak önemli bir potansiyele sahip olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
