Metaverse Technologies in the Tourism Industry: A General Review of Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

Öz

The aim of this study is to examine the application areas of metaverse technologies in the tourism sector and to identify the opportunities and challenges these technologies present for tourism activities. Document analysis was employed as the data collection method, and relevant academic studies, reports, news sources, and digital materials were systematically reviewed. The findings indicate that metaverse technologies enable users to experience destinations virtually, particularly those that are physically inaccessible. Through features such as telepresence, informational support, and interactivity, tourists are able to explore destinations in advance and enhance their overall travel experience. Metaverse applications contribute to increased accessibility, support sustainable tourism practices, and strengthen intercultural interaction. However, challenges such as the digital divide, high-cost hardware requirements, data security concerns, and platform interoperability issues have also been identified. Overall, the study demonstrates that the metaverse holds significant potential as a complementary technology to traditional tourism practices and may play a central role in the digital transformation of the tourism industry.
