The Relatıonshıp Between Unemployment And Ecologıcal Footprınt: BRICST countries

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 5 Sayı: 2, 25 - 38, 30.12.2024

Öz

In this article, the relationship between unemployment and ecological footprint for BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and Turkey) was examined. Ecological footprint has been preferred as an environmental indicator. It has been determined in the literature that it is a broader and more detailed concept than other environmental indicators. In the model, annual data for the period 2000-2022, ecological footprint, unemployment, economic growth and renewable energy consumption variables were used. The seemingly unrelated regression method was applied to estimate the relationship between these variables. according to the estimation results, it has been determined that unemployment, economic growth and renewable energy consumption are significant at the level of 1% significance on the ecological footprint. These results make it easy to explain the ecological footprint of the independent variables, which is the dependent variable. In addition, it has been concluded that unemployment and economic growth variables increase the ecological footprint in the BRICS-T countrys, while renewable energy consumption reduces the ecological footprint.
