John Rawls’ Concept Of Public Reason And Discussions For Democratic Negotiations

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the scope and limits of the concept of public reason developed by J. Rawls and its importance in terms of democratic negotiation. Descriptive, analysis and comparison methods were used in the study. The affinities between Derrida’s concept of undecidability and Rawls's understanding of freestanding conception on its own are examined. The study consists of three parts. In the first part, the scope and definition of the concept of public reason developed by Rawls is analyzed. In the second part, the content of public reason developed by Rawls, its procedural part, its ideal, its contribution to the constitutional democratic order were evaluated in terms of democratic negotiation. Here, Rawls's discussion, especially with Habermas, is evaluated in terms of his contribution to political theory. Another fundamental concept is the characterization of the political as a field that “freestanding”. For Rawls, this is to leave "philosophy where it is". In the last part of the study, the discussion was tried to be evaluated in connection with our own political culture. It has been argued that considering the political field as an area of undecidability, which is a basic technique and concept of deconstruction, in terms of religion, philosophy and morality, will reduce the tensions of the political culture that is tried to be formed on secularism, nationalism and religiosity. In addition, it has been argued that the overlapping consensus developed by Rawls is an important opportunity for our country to overcome the undecidability situation in the political arena.
