Living in an Age of Political Interregnum: Retrotopia or Nostalgia as an Ideal Type in Bauman's Thought

Öz

This study aims to put forward the concept of retrotopia and the theoretical dimensions of this concept by critical thinker Zygmunt Bauman, who is known for his analyses of social and political transformation in contemporary society. Although Bauman has focused on the concept of “utopia”, which is a promise of a social future, in all his works, he deals with the pains of change of liquid (late) modern societies that have lost their collective and political hopes for the future in his last work called “retrotopia”. At the origin of the social change that the concept points to is the claim that the concepts of politics (state) and power are separated from each other in today's societies. The content of the discussion will be considered in the context of Bauman’s theoretical contributions and his analyses of contemporary political and social processes. The study proposes that Bauman's concept of retrotopia can be used as an ideal type or conceptual path to make sense of current political and cultural changes. Retrotopia can therefore be read as a model that makes the everyday experiences of current society visible and more understandable, or as an instrument for analyzing reality. Retrotopian ideas are also thought to paradoxically engage in a similar effort to utopian ideals in overcoming the “present”, even though they tend toward different historical trajectories. In the study, a descriptive and interpretative method was used regarding a theoretical path that can be used in analyzing contemporary political and social events.

Politik Interregnum Zamanlarında Yaşamak: Bauman Düşüncesinde İdeal Bir Tip Olarak Retrotopia ya da Nostalji

Öz

Bu çalışma, çağdaş toplumdaki sosyal ve politik dönüşüme ilişkin analizleriyle tanınan eleştirel düşünür Zygmunt Bauman’ın retrotopia kavramı ve bu kavramın kuramsal boyutlarını ortaya koyma amacını taşımaktadır. Bauman, tüm çalışmalarında toplumsal bir gelecek vaadi olan “ütopya” kavramını merkeze almış olsa da, “retrotopia” adındaki son çalışmasında geleceğe dair kolektif ve politik umutlarını yitiren akışkan (geç) modern toplumların değişim sancılarını konu edinmektedir. Kavramın işaret ettiği toplumsal değişimin kökeninde, günümüz toplumlarında politika (devlet) ve iktidar kavramlarının birbirinden ayrılmış olduğu iddiası yer almaktadır. Tartışmanın kapsamı, Bauman’ın kendi kuramsal katkıları ve çağdaş politik ve toplumsal süreçlere dair analizleri bağlamında ele alınacaktır. Çalışma, Bauman’ın retrotopia kavramının mevcut politik ve kültürel değişimleri anlamlandırmada ideal bir tip ya da kavramsal bir izlek olarak kullanılabileceği önerisini sunmaktadır. Retrotopia bu nedenle mevcut toplumun gündelik deneyimlerini görünür ve daha anlaşılır kılan bir model veya gerçekliği analiz etmeye yarayan bir araç olarak okunabilir. Ayrıca retrotopik düşüncelerin, farklı tarihsel yörüngelere eğilimli olsalar da, “şimdiki” zamanın üstesinden gelme konusunda, paradoksal bir biçimde ütopyacı idealler ile benzer bir çaba içinde oldukları düşünülmektedir. Çalışmada çağdaş politik ve sosyal olayların analiz edilmesinde başvurulabilecek bir kuramsal izlek hakkında, betimleyici ve yorumlayıcı bir yöntem kullanılmıştır.
