Coccinellidae species and their population changes in alfalfa field of Akçakale country of Şanlıurfa province and a new record, Exochomus pubescens Küster for Turkey

Abstract

The present study was undertaken in order to determine of Coccinelidae species and their population changes in alfalfa field between 2006 and 2007, in Akçakale county of Şanlıurfa province. In alfalfa fields, the first populations of Coccinellidae species were detected in May 2006 and April 2007, and reached the highest population densities in both years at the second half of August. Totally 1653 and 1937 individuals were obtained in 2006 and 2007 respectively and 14 coccinellid species inhabiting alfalfa fields were identified. Hippodamia (Adonia) variegata (G.) was the most prevalent and had the highest relative abundance species in both years. This was followed by Coccinella undecimpunctata (L.), Coccinella septempunctata (L.) and Scymnus levaillanti M. respectively. These four coccinellid species regularly displayed population increase throughout the season and constituted 93.40% and 94.20% of total collected specimen in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Among the obtained species, Exochomus pubescens Küster is a new record for Coccinellidae fauna of Turkey. As a result, Coccinellidae species were found intensively and present in alfalfa fields throughout the season.
