Assessing the accessibility standards of urban green spaces: A case study of Siirt
Öz
Urban open-green spaces are important public areas where people socialize and interact, bringing together individuals from various social classes and cultures. However, as is the case worldwide, the challenges faced by disabled individuals and their families remain one of the fundamental issues in Turkey. Making urban spaces accessible to all members of society, including children, the elderly, and especially disabled individuals, is a requirement for a sustainable and inclusive urbanization approach. Therefore, in the design and construction of urban green spaces, the physical disabilities of individuals must be considered, and these spaces should be made accessible to everyone. Physical facilities that prevent visually and physically disabled individuals from being present independently and actively in green spaces should be improved. Ramps, pedestrian paths, stairs, and open space standards are among the key elements regarding accessibility.
This study aims to examine the accessibility of Kızlar Tepesi and Siirt Millet Garden parks in Siirt province. The evaluation was carried out by comparing the current status of the parks with universal accessibility standards; in particular, the physical features of ramps, pedestrian paths, and green areas were analyzed. The findings revealed the limitations disabled individuals face when using these spaces, and solutions have been proposed. As a result, significant deficiencies in accessibility were identified in both parks. While issues such as steep roads and inadequate seating areas are prominent in Kızlar Tepesi Park, it was determined that Siirt Millet Garden, despite its modern design, requires improvements in certain areas. This study aims to offer more equitable and accessible living spaces by suggesting inclusive and accessible park designs to local governments and designers, enabling disabled individuals to use these spaces more independently.
