Impacts of aggregate and warm mix asphalt additives on the moisture susceptibility of polymer-modified asphalt mixtures

The impacts of aggregates and warm mix asphalt additives on the moisture damage characteristics of unmodified and polymer-modified asphalt mixtures were examined in the current study. AASHTO T283 procedure was employed for the purpose of assessing the moisture susceptibility of mixtures. For the production of asphalt mixtures, FT-paraffin and Montan wax were added to unmodified and polymer-modified bitumen. In the current study, four crushed aggregates from different sources were used, two of which contain a high percentage of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and the other two contain a high percentage of calcium oxide (CaO). FT-paraffin and Montan wax reduced the production and compaction temperatures of both unmodified bitumen and polymer-modified bitumen by about 10°C. The results of the research show that the source of aggregate and polymer modification had a significant impact on the mixtures' indirect tensile strength ratios. The results also show that the chemical composition of the aggregates is not related to the moisture susceptibility of the mixtures. Hence, source of the aggregate to be utilized in the mixture should be taken into account.
