Determination of the Effectiveness of Biochar Against Root-Knot Nematodes [(Meloidogyne spp.) (Tylenchida: Meloidogynidae)] in Greenhouse Cucumber Cultivation

Öz

This study was conducted under greenhouse conditions on cucumber plants in 2022 to determine the effectiveness of biochar against root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). In the trial, three different doses of biochar (250, 375, and 500 kg/da), one chemical reference treatment, and an untreated control group were evaluated using a Randomized Complete Block Design. According to the results obtained, the effects of biochar applications were determined as 31.49% on plant height, 35.37% on yield, and 64.58% on the reduction of root gall formation. Statistical analyses revealed that there were no significant differences among treatments in terms of plant height, whereas the differences observed in root gall index and yield parameters were found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). These findings indicate that biochar exhibits a dose-dependent effect, particularly in reducing root damage caused by root-knot nematodes, and can provide positive contributions to yield-related parameters. However, in order to more clearly elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action, it is essential to conduct further comprehensive field and greenhouse studies across different soil types, long-term applications, and various crop species.
