Determinants of the Adoption of Drought-Tolerant and Early Maturing Soybean Varieties among Farmers in Kano and Kaduna States, Nigeria.

Öz

Abstract: This study investigated the determinants and constraints of adopting drought-tolerant and early-maturing soybean varieties among smallholder farmers. This research utilized a descriptive survey design and structured questionnaires, data were collected from 600 respondents. The socio-economic profile revealed a male-dominated farming landscape (90.00%), with a majority of farmers aged between 20 and 40 years (65.00%), suggesting a relatively young workforce. Despite the high literacy gap, where 45.00% had only primary education, the adoption rate of improved soybean varieties was notably high at 73.00%. The Probit regression analysis identified education level (z = 3.12, p < 0.01), extension contact (z = 2.56, p < 0.05), and access to credit (z = 4.10, p < 0.01) as significant positive drivers of adoption. Conversely, household size exerted a negative influence, though not statistically significant at conventional levels. The diagnostic statistics, including a Pseudo R square of 0.5402 and a highly significant Likelihood Ratio Chi-square (65.40, p < 0.001), confirmed the model’s robust explanatory power. Despite the high adoption rate, farmers face critical bottlenecks. The primary constraints identified include the high cost of improved seeds (ranked 1st, mean = 4.25) and lack of access to credit (ranked 2nd, mean = 4.10). These findings suggest that while farmers are willing to transition to climate-resilient agriculture, financial and institutional barriers remain the dominant hurdles. Policy interventions focusing on subsidized inputs and credit accessibility are essential to sustaining these adoption levels and ensuring regional food security in the face of climate variability.
