Trends in Postgraduate Studies in Oxidative Stress in Türkiye: A Bibliometric Analysis for the Years 2020–2025

Öz

This study aims to determine the bibliometric characteristics and academic trends of postgraduate theses completed in the field of oxidative stress in Türkiye between 2020 and 2025. A total of 560 theses obtained from the YOK National Thesis Center database were analyzed in terms of university, department, year, publication status, language, thesis type, and supervisor title. According to the findings, the highest number of theses were completed in 2022 (n=125), followed by 2023 (n=114), 2024 (n=101), and 2025 (n=85), indicating that research activity remained substantial throughout the study period despite a gradual decline after the 2022 peak. In terms of institutional productivity, the highest number of theses were completed at the Health Sciences University (n=56), followed by Gaziantep University (n=25) and Hacettepe University (n=24). In terms of departmental distribution, the highest percentage belonged to the field of Biochemistry (n=95), followed by veterinary medicine, physiology, and clinical sciences. It was determined that 146 out of a total of 560 theses (26.1%) were converted into scientific publications. 69.9% of these publications were in journals indexed in SCI/SCI-E, while the remainder were published in national and other international journals. A total of 909 citations were made to the publications, with 97 studies receiving at least one citation. 91.8% of the theses were written in Turkish, and 8.2% in English. In terms of thesis type, master's theses (40.5%) ranked first, followed by medical specialization theses (31.1%) and doctoral theses (25%). 56.1% of the supervisors held the title of professor. These findings indicate an increase in academic output in the field of oxidative stress in Türkiye, primarily concentrated within the basic sciences. However, the low publication rate and limited use of English are considered areas that need improvement in terms of international visibility.
