The Straits of Malacca and Singapore are important sea lanes for Japan, China and other peripheral states particularly as regards the transport of energy resources from the Middle East. Part III of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) established a specific regime in relation to the straits for international navigation and transit passage. The Straits of Malacca and Singapore are the most important straits used for international navigation. After Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore obtained independence, a mechanism to facilitate and promote international cooperation was established. Since the 1980s, the situation regarding the Straits of Malacca and Singapore have changed. The UNCLOS was adopted in 1982 and the economic and strategic importance of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore has become even more important because of the significant development of the Asian economy and the increase of tension in the maritime areas which the Straits of Malacca and Singapore connect. This article firstly provides a brief overview of the regime of the straits used for international navigation under the UNCLOS and, then, explains the historical development of the mechanism for international cooperation in relation to the Straits of Malacca and Singapore has been in place since the 1950s. It also takes up salient contemporary issues relating to the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
