The Psychosocial Effects of Infertility and Evidence-Based Approaches of Health Professionals

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 10 Sayı: 2, 136 - 152, 29.08.2025

Infertility is not merely a reproductive health condition but a profound experience that significantly impacts individuals' psychological and social well-being. Psychosocial factors such as stress, loss, and stigma can greatly influence treatment processes and overall quality of life. The infertility process may lead to psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, and emotional disorders. Additionally, the inability to conceive is associated with grief and loss, often resulting in a deep sense of emptiness and sorrow. This process can contribute to social isolation and diminished self-esteem, negatively affecting psychosocial well-being. The societal expectation of parenthood as a culturally significant norm may impose psychological pressure on individuals experiencing infertility. Women, in particular, may feel inadequate due to societal expectations, which can further exacerbate depression. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to recognize these psychosocial effects and provide emotional support to individuals. Evidence-based approaches emphasize the need for healthcare professionals to address not only the physical aspects of infertility treatment but also its psychosocial dimensions. This review presents the psychosocial effects of infertility and the evidence-based approaches adopted by healthcare professionals.
