The Role of Intellectuals in The Formatıon of Socio-Political and Religious Hegemony: An Introduction To The Sociological Analysis of The Gramscician Organic-Traditional Intellectual Dichotomy

Abstract

Antonio Gramsci is one of the important Neo-Marxist theorists of the 20th century. The most important concept of Gramsci's theory is hegemony. According to him, hegemony is a type of authority based on consent. Hegemonic power bases its authority on the consent of those who are subject to it. The production of consent is a complex and long process. Because it is a mechanism that aims to transform the internal states of those who are subject to it, such as mentality, emotions, values, attitudes and worldview. According to Gramsci, the most effective agents of producing hegemony are intellectuals. As a social category, intellectuals have played an important role in the change and establishment of socio-political and religious power in every period of history. According to Gramsci, who classified the category of intellectuals in two ways, it is the primary duty of every social class that aspires to socio-political, religious or cultural power to create its own intellectual class. He conceptualized this process as the formation of organic intellectuals. Traditional intellectual is a concept that refers to the category of intellectuals who are relatively autonomous and not affiliated with any social class. According to Gramsci, the social class that aspires to power has a dual duty in relation to intellectuals. On the one hand, it is the task of producing organic intellectuals from within itself, and on the other hand, it is the task of transforming relatively autonomous traditional intellectuals into its own organic intellectuals. The continuity of socio-political and religious hegemony depends in part on the functioning of this mechanism related to intellectuals. In this study based on qualitative research method, the relationship between Gramsci's categories of intellectuals and hegemony, which he defined as a type of socio-political and religious power, will be discussed from a sociological perspective.
