Mechanical Stability and Thermodynamic Response of V₃BO₆ as a Potential Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Material
Öz
The long-term electrochemical performance of lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode materials strongly depends not only on their capacity characteristics but also on their mechanical robustness and thermal stability during repeated lithiation and delithiation processes. In this study, the mechanical stability and thermodynamic response of orthorhombic V₃BO₆ are systematically investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE). Structural optimization confirms the stability of the Pnma crystal structure and shows excellent agreement with available experimental data. The calculated elastic constants satisfy the Born mechanical stability criteria, indicating the intrinsic mechanical stability of V₃BO₆. The evaluated bulk modulus (183.2 GPa), Young’s modulus (242.9 GPa), and Vickers hardness (10.95 GPa) reveal a mechanically robust framework capable of resisting deformation under external stress. Furthermore, the B/G ratio of 1.93 and Poisson’s ratio of 0.274 suggest moderate ductility, which is advantageous for accommodating the volume variations associated with electrochemical cycling. Phonon dispersion calculations exhibit no imaginary frequencies, confirming the dynamical stability of the material. The high Debye temperature (718.9 K) and temperature-dependent thermodynamic properties indicate excellent thermal stability and efficient heat dissipation characteristics. The calculated heat capacity approaching the Dulong–Petit limit at elevated temperatures further demonstrates the material's capability to withstand thermal fluctuations during battery operation. These findings suggest that V₃BO₆ possesses a favorable combination of mechanical strength, structural integrity, and thermodynamic stability, highlighting its potential as a promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
