Demographic Characteristics and Culture Results of Patients Diagnosed with Tinea Capitis/Tinea Barbae: A Retrospective Analysis

Öz

Purpose: The lack of epidemiological studies and mandatory reporting limits research on tinea capitis and tinea barbae in our country. This study provides insights into the demographic characteristics and pathogen spectrum of patients presenting to our clinic. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 508 patients clinically pre-diagnosed with tinea capitis-tinea barbae(ICD-10 code B35.0) at İzmir Katip Çelebi University, Atatürk Training and Research Hospital, Dermatology Outpatient Clinic, between October 2006-July 2024. Results: The age distribution of 508 patients ranged from 0 to 76 years. Of these patients, 67%(n=339) were male, 33%(n=167) were female. The most frequently affected age group for both genders was 0–5 years, comprising 35.7%(n=182) of the cohort. Scalp cultures were requested for 19.68%(n=100) of the patients, and growth was observed in 46 samples. Of the cultures, Microsporum canis was the most prevalent pathogen, detected in 38 cases(82.61%). The sole adult patient with positive culture results was a 44-year-old male with tinea barbae caused by T. rubrum. Conclusion: Similar to the literature, the disease was most commonly observed in children, with the highest prevalence in the 0–5 age group. M. canis was the predominant agent across all age groups. The high number of diagnoses in adults in our study may be due to coexisting immunosuppressive conditions or the inclusion of tinea barbae diagnoses in men. As noted in the literature, the increasing frequency of tinea capitis in immunocompetent adults highlights the importance of considering this condition in the differential diagnosis of scalp disorders in adults.
