A New Grave Inscription from Dorylaion: Gaius Cercenius Domitius Aelianus

Öz

In this article, an ancient Greek funerary inscription dated to the Roman Imperial Period from Alpagut Village, Mihalgazi District, Eskişehir Province is introduced. This inscription was made as part of the Epigraphic Research of Eskişehir Province under the direction of Professor Dr. Emre Erten held in 2022. Another inscription was found in Ilıca Village, South of Eskişehir, and this inscription was published by H. v. Prott in 1902. This article compares this inscription with the new inscription from Alpagut. Thanks to the Alpagut inscription, the grave owner’s full name was revealed and could be read for the first time. This name is not fully included in the earlier inscription published by Prott. The inscription we have, with the information it contains, also contributes to the available data on the Hellenization and Romanization processes in the region. Furthermore, since the grave protection formula at the end of the Alpagut inscription is complete, it also proves the accuracy of the comments previously made by Avram in connection with this topic.

Öz

Bu makalede Eskişehir İli, Mihalgazi İlçesi, Alpagut Mahallesi’nden Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’ne tarihlenen Hellence bir mezar yazıtı tanıtılmaktadır. Söz konusu eser 2022 yılında Doç. Dr. Emre Erten başkanlığında yürütülen Eskişehir İli Epigrafik Yüzey Araştırması kapsamında kayıt altına alınmıştır. Bu makalede, söz konusu yazıt ile Eskişehir’in güneyindeki Ilıca Köyü’nde bulunan ve 1902 yılında H. v. Prott tarafından yayınlanan bir başka yazıt karşılaştırılmaktadır. Alpagut buluntusu sayesinde Prott’un yayınında mezar sahibinin adının bir kısmının yer almadığı ortaya çıkmış ve bu kişinin tam ismi ilk defa okunabilmiştir. Yazıt içerdiği bilgilerle bölgedeki Hellenizasyon ve Romanizasyon süreçlerine dair eldeki verilere de katkı sağlamaktadır. Ayrıca yazıtın sonunda yer alan mezar koruma formülü tam olarak elimize geçmesi sebebiyle, daha önce bu konuyla ilgili Avram tarafından yapılan yorumların doğruluğunu da kanıtlamaktadır.
