Tankards from the Lake District: Continuity, Local Traditions and Interactions

Öz

In this article, tankards dated to EBA II and EBA III in the Lake District are examined in terms of production characteristics, ware groups, types and interregional interactions. The study considers examples from Karataş-Semayük, Hacımusalar Höyük, Bademağacı Höyük, Kıyakdede, and Güreme II, together with tankards housed in the Antalya, Burdur, and Yalvaç archaeological museums. As the findspots and contexts of the museum examples are unknown, these vessels are evaluated through comparison with material from the Lake District, Central and Western Anatolia. The tankards are classified into two ware groups based on paste, surface treatment, firing and production technique, and, into different subtypes based on form. Some tankards possibly dating to EBA II may provide evidence for the emergence of this form. Examples with a red slip band on the interior of the rim may indicate the beginning of standardisation in Lake District tankard production in late EBA II. In EBA III, Types a and b reflect both interregional interactions and local production traditions
