From Theodosian Harbour to Yenikapı Shipwrecks

Öz

The location of Byzantion at the point of transition between Anatolia and the Balkans, the Black Sea and the Aegean has facilitated the development of the city. Polybios of the second century BC had clearly noted the importance of Byzantion in his World History: “As far as the sea is concerned, Byzantium occupies a position the most secure and in every way the most advantageous of any town in our quarter of the world” Müller-Wiener 1998, 1 . In addition to controlling the trade routes, the city had a wide hinterland suitable for agriculture. Besides, fishing on the straits was an important input. The fact that the bonito fish migrating from the Black Sea to the Aegean is depicted on the coins of the city underlines the importance of fishing for Byzantion Tekin 2005, 11-12 .
