Wearable Technology-Supported Training and Jump Performance in Elite Volleyball Players

Öz

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of a 6-week wearable technology-supported and individualized training approach on jump performance indicators in elite male volleyball players.

Method: Twenty elite male volleyball players (age: 24.5 ± 2.3 years; height: 190.2 ± 5.1 cm; body mass: 85.7 ± 6.4 kg) competing at the professional league level were randomly allocated to an experimental group (n = 10; wearable data-guided training) or a control group (n = 10; routine team training). Jump performance was assessed before and after the six-week period using vertical jump height, flight time, and contact time measured with the Optojump photoelectric system. Within-group changes were examined with paired samples t-tests, and the group-by-time effect was evaluated by comparing change scores between groups.

Results: The experimental group showed significant within-group improvements in vertical jump height (mean change = 5.5 cm, 8.4%, t(9) = 5.89, p < 0.001, d = 1.18), flight time (mean change = 0.05 s, 6.9%, t(9) = 5.27, p < 0.001, d = 1.10), and contact time (mean change = -0.02 s, -7.1%, t(9) = -3.43, p = 0.008, d = 0.78). Change-score comparisons showed greater improvement in the experimental group for vertical jump height (difference = 3.5 cm, p = 0.034) and flight time (difference = 0.04 s, p = 0.011), whereas the between-group difference for contact time was not statistically significant (p = 0.339).

Conclusion: The findings indicate that wearable technology-supported and individualized training was associated with greater improvements in vertical jump height and flight time in elite male volleyball players; however, the contact-time finding should be interpreted cautiously because the between-group change difference was not statistically significant.
