Determinants of Rational Drug Use In Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study
Öz
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the level of rational drug use in older adutls and to examine the factors affecting this status.
Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 445 individuals aged 65 and over living in the city center of Zonguldak. Data were collected using a sociodemographic data form and the Rational Drug Use Scale. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data.
Results: The mean rational drug use score was determined as 57.43±8.06. A statistically significant difference was found between the education level of the older adults and their rational drug use scores (p<0.05). Negative and significant correlations were found between rational drug use and age (r=-0.142, p=0.003) and the number of medications used (r=-0.200, p<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the regression analysis results, education level was the strongest predictor of rational drug use, while age and the presence of chronic diseases negatively affected rational drug use. It was found that rational drug use in the older adults is a multifaceted phenomenon, particularly influenced by factors such as education level, age, and medication burden.
