The Role of Olive Groves in Sustainable Rural Development and Rural Architectural Planning: Mediterranean Perspectives and the Case of Türkiye
Öz
Olive groves (Olea europaea L.) are one of the most typical Mediterranean basin agro-ecosystems, both as a source of agricultural products and as the infrastructure of the complex rural landscape. This qualitative study combines literature review, Medi- terranean comparisons, and thematic analysis to explore olive groves as ecological, so- cio-economic, architectural, and cultural drivers, with Türkiye as a representative case. The article highlights the multifunctionality of olive landscapes through association ecosystem services, agrotourism potential, and value-chain structures and cultural and architectural heritage within a rural development framework. As an example of Türkiye, the analysis will combine up-to-date information on the suitability of the land, production limitations, climatic stress, and land-use transformation and governance relationships that define the olive-growing areas. The results show that despite the huge potential of Türkiye to produce olives especially in marginal and sloping terrains, the potential is limited by low productivity, climate change issues, inadequate modernization and inadequate planning methods. In order to respond to these issues, the paper suggests that an integrated model can be used, including value-chain rehabilitation, multifunctional agro-ecosys- tems, climate-responsive strategies, and spatial and architectural design interventions. Conceptualizing the idea of olive groves as living infrastructures of rural landscapes, this study also adds to the inter- and trans-disciplinary debate on sustainable rural futures and provides a more planning-focused approach to the further development of rural architecture and landscape-driven development approaches in Mediterranean regions. It supports the future trajectory of rural architecture. The findings obtained regarding rural landscape infrastructure reveal an interdisciplinary model of study.
