Allied powers who had succeeded in getting Treaty of Sevres signed to Ottoman
Government in the summer of 1920 demanded that acceptance of the treaty by Ankara
government be procured, as well. It had been seen that Damat Ferit Pasha government had not
obtained any result from rigoristic policy which had been conducted over Anatolia by Damat
Ferit Pasha government and, furthermore, gaining ground of Greek Army across Anatolia
had been stopped by nationalists. In this case, Allied Powers turned towards a new quest
in order to be able to get the treaty accepted to the nationalists, too. By putting the pressure on
Sultan Vahdettin (Mehmed VI), Allied Powers procured the resignation of Damat Ferit Pasha
government and, instead, that Tevfik Pasha government be formed. Put into power in order to
compromise Istanbul-Anatolia reconciliation, Tevfik Pasha Government sended a commitee
which had been established under the chairmanship of Ahmet İzzet Pasha to Anatolia on
3rd December, 1920. The commitee met with Ankara committee on 5th December in Bilecik.
Through a manoeuvre by Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the committee was taken to Ankara and
detained. Thus, reconciliation effort of İstanbul with Anatolia was made unsuccessful from
the very beginning. When the committee was in Ankara, while Ankara press was making
news in line with Mustafa Kemal’s thoughts, İstanbul press was giving rumour-based news
which did not reflect the truth. The committee returned in a quiet and retiring way to İstanbul
during the days of London Conference.
