The purpose of Turkish Revolution was to provide the newly founded Turkish
Government a national structure in the political, economical, cultural and social sphere.
Because of the Ottoman Empire’s Pan-Islamic state structure, Turkish people was forced to
use Ottoman Turkish which was a written language that did not reflect their own language.
Although it was understood in Tanzimat Period that Ottoman Turkish was complicated
Turkish people’s literacy, none of the statesmen dared to accept Latin alphabet because to
change Ottoman Turkish that was accepted as a written language and to accept Latin alphabet
were perceived as offensive to traditions and language.
Ghazi Mustafa Kemal, who was aware of the fact that it was vitally necessary for the
Turkish nation to regain their own language, history and culture in order to reach in order to
reach modernity. After he set up a new political form of Turkish State, he took action to give
Turkish society’s own national culture. The first step was the realization of Letter Revolution
in the struggle of gaining national culture of Turkish Nation and returning the actual identity
of Turkish Nation. To realize it in a short period, he went to blackboard on his own; he taught
to teachers, scientists and the members of Parliament; he examined them and emboldened
them about that situation. As each revolution he carried out, he took great support from
the press about being adopted Turkish Alphabet. Besides those, he went to country trip to
adopt new letters to Turkish people. Tekirdağ was the first place where he went for that aim.
Tekirdağ which was Ghazi Mustafa Kemal’s first commander of military division, took the
first city title as Ghazi’s going to board as a teacher on 23rd august 1928. In that time, love
and trust that Tekirdağ’s people showed towards to Ghazi and sincerity in learning Turkish
Alphabet, increased Ghazi’s perseverance and courage about realization of Letter Alphabet.
