Öz
It is difficult to place the intellectuals and. statesmen who lived in the
Iate period of the Ottoman Empire in a certain compartment as a result
of their life experience. However, this type of intellectual has carried
on his effort insistently to solve the problems of the society in
which he lived and to transmiss the thought and science of the West
to it by using the contemporary data and possibilities.
The distant position and stance far from the people existing among
the intellectuals of The Constituonal Monarchy era was inherited from
the Tanzimat era. Most of their incompetence was originating from
ttieir struggle and attempt to solve th~ problems independently from
the dynamics of the nation and the society. This intellectual accumulation
appearing in this period played an important role in establishing
the Republican era
