Ahlat Marshes are located in the districts of Ahlat in the Bitlis Province of Eastern Anatolia Region. The marshes; Ahlat Marshes has a great importance since it is one of the 48 wetlands (nation wise), is also one of the 5 wetlands (province wise) which are nominated as “Wetlands of National Importance”. In this study, in order to investigate the heavy metal levels in the Ahlat Marshes, the surface waters were sampled from 7 different stations in November 2015, February 2016, May 2016 and August 2016 periods. Heavy metal parameters such as Al (aluminum), As (arsenic), T-Cr (total chrome), (nickel), Fe (iron), Cu (copper), Cd (cadmium), Mn (manganese), F (fluoride), Pb (lead), Hg (mercury) and Se (selenium) were measured by using ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry) device. Measurement data has been evaluated by comparing with the limit values stated in the Surface Water Quality Regulation and Water Pollution Control Regulation. In terms of water quality; Ahlat Marshes is categorized under Class II considering T-Cr values and when other heavy metal values are considered, it is categorized under Class I. Cu and Cd results exceed the limit values stated in the national legislation due to the factors such as fish farms, mines, septic tanks near the marshes and geogenic origin. It is believed that this first-time study will make a great contribution to the realization of one of the activities within the water quality implementation targets included in the Ahlat Marshes Management Plan.
