Natural stones used in stair treads, interior and exterior floors are exposed vehicle and pedestrian loads. Since the building stones are generally produced in the form of plates of different sizes, the flexural tensile strength of these materials is an extremely important parameter. The size and thickness of plates, the distance between the support points can be determined according to the flexural tensile strength of the rock. The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between flexural tensile strength of tuffs used building stones and engineering properties which are easy to implement and low cost. In this study, flexural tensile strength (FTS), impact strength (DN), rock impact hardness number (RIHN), coefficient of rock strength (CRS), impact strength indeks (ISI), flakiness index (FI), Swedish brittleness index (S20), and porosity (P) of 27 tuffs were determined. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses (SPSS) were performed for estimating FTS of tuffs and F and t-test were used to verify the equations. The results show that there were good and satisfactory relationships between FTS and engineering properties of tuffs. Furthermore, the multiple models have a better predictive efficiency than simple models and they can be applied for predicting FTS of tuffs with reasonable confidence. When the derived equations are examined, tests such as S20, ISI, CRS, FI and P are very effective among the parameters used in predicting the FTS.
