This paper looks at the validity of the arguments put forward to promote the use of English as a medium of education at various levels of Turkish educational system higher education in particular It argues for an awareness among English language teaching professionals in Turkey of the social and cuItural factors influencing the use and spread of English in the Turkish context Then it summarizes the results of a recent survey carried out at the Middle East Technical University The findings clearly show the difference between the rhetoric used by the proponents of this policy and the reality we are faced in English medium classes
