Sandstorms in Northern China: Seasonal Dynamics of the Environmental Trajectories

Öz

Sandstorms significantly impact the economic and ecological landscape of northern China, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. These events arise from the interplay of climate factors, soil conditions, droughts, desertification, and the sparse distribution of vegetation on sandy fine-grained soils. To effectively understand the dynamics of sandstorms, it is essential to conduct an integrated analysis that encompasses diverse data sources, including statistical climate observations and cartographic information. This paper aims to evaluate the characteristics of sandstorms in China through a comprehensive analysis, focusing on the frequency and intensity of these events in relation to seasonal variations and geographic trajectories. Key data utilized in this study includes climate, soil, and precipitation maps, as well as relevant physical parameters and topographical features. The findings of this research highlight the principal components associated with the occurrence of sandstorms, thereby contributing valuable insights into their management and mitigation strategies: The occurrence of sandstorms is influenced by several key factors: 1) Temperature, which stimulates cold-heat convection and enhances wind energy, 2) Wind power, particularly when it exceeds force 4 on the Beaufort scale, enabling it to raise and transport fine sediments, 3) Soil type, specifically sandy and silt-sized loess particles that can be carried by the wind over vast distances, 4) Geomorphic landforms that modify wind patterns through funneling effects, and 5) Vegetation coverage, which is sparse and unable to provide adequate protection against sandstorms. An analysis of these factors includes variables such as wind speed and power, soil distribution, annual precipitation, mean wind power density, and overall energy capacity. Spatial analysis highlights regions most affected by sandstorms, notably the Tarim Basin (including the Taklimakan Desert), western Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, central Gansu, and parts of Shaanxi (specifically Yan'an, Yulin, and Baoji)
