CLIMBING ROPE LONGEVITY AND RETIREMENT: AN OVERVIEW OF GUIDELINES AND TESTING

Öz

Methods of determining when to retire dynamic climbing ropes are reviewed. Common knowledge, published research, and lesser-known evaluation methods that involve standardized testing and data assessment are summarized. Topics include conventional inspection methods, contamination and environmental factors, breaking strength, elasticity, maximum impact force, manufacturers’ guidelines, number of pitches or metres of use, number of lead falls and fall factor, dynamic safety factor, and working capacity over an edge. Changes in rope diameter and knotability are examined as potential indicators of retirement. Recommendations are summarized and recycling options are briefly discussed.
