Mapping the Literature on Green Finance and Climate Change: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

Globally increasing climate change–related problems have made it necessary to reassess financial systems within the scope of sustainability policies. This situation has led the academic literature to focus on financial instruments that take environmental impacts into account and on climate change. In addition, green finance stands out as an important research area in terms of reducing the effects of climate change–related problems on financial systems and supporting sustainable development goals. The aim of this study is to analyze the structural and thematic characteristics of the green finance and climate change literature through bibliometric methods. The bibliometric analysis includes publication trend analysis, citation-based descriptive analysis, keyword co-occurrence network analysis, and co-authorship network analysis to reveal the intellectual and thematic structure of the literature. In the study, a total of 621 publications conducted between 1996 and 2025 and accessible in the Web of Science (WoS) database were examined. The publications to be subjected to bibliometric analysis were identified through WoS using the keywords “Green Finance” and “Climate Change.” In the study, only the WoS database was used in order to avoid potential problems that may arise during the process of identifying and eliminating duplicate publications and due to the belief that the evaluation processes of publications in the WoS database are conducted more effectively. Without any year limitation, the full texts of all publications included in the analysis were downloaded and analyses were carried out with the help of the R Biblioshiny program. The obtained findings show that the literature on green finance and climate change has grown rapidly especially in recent years and has gained an interdisciplinary structure. It is observed that there has been a significant increase in the number of publications especially after 2019. The results of the analysis reveal that China is the leading country in the literature in terms of total citation count and that publications are predominantly concentrated in journals focusing on sustainability, energy, and environmental issues. In addition, keyword and network analyses show that the literature clusters around themes such as sustainable development, renewable energy, and climate finance. Furthermore, the literature is shaped around two main thematic axes: studies examining the relationships between energy consumption, economic growth, and carbon emissions, and studies investigating the role of green finance instruments in supporting sustainable development and climate policies.
