In this study, it was aimed to obtain opinions of secondary school
students regarding the role of social media during value formation period. The
research was done with the qualitative research method. The research’s participants consist of 30 secondary school students who received their training at the
third grade at a secondary school in Küçükçekmece in İstanbul in 2016-2017
educational training years. The criterion sampling method was used in the selection of students. The active social media usages were considered as the criteria.
The data was obtained through the compositions that the students were asked to
write on the social media and values, in the research. Compositions were analyzed with the descriptive analysis method. At the end of research students stated
that using social media disturbs their responsibilities, affects studying as well
as decreases loyalty to family and care showing towards guests. They also told
that they feel free in social media, get pleasure from nice sharing, fulfill their
need of love, increase their feeling of patriotism, sustain their culture by sharing cultural elements and become more sensible about animals. In addition, it was
also obtained that students complete their homework by cooperation via social
media and get information from social media about many subjects.
