THE VERB KÂNA [كَانَ] IN ARABIC LANGUAGE AND ITS USE IN THE QUR’AN

Kāna [كان] is a verb which is commonly used in Arabic language. Although this verb morphologically indicates past tense in general, it also designates various tenses in the Qur’ān. In this article we examine verb kāna in Arabic Language in general, and give information regarding its conjugations; being its absolute or defective verb; bringing noun and predicate of kāna forward or delaying them; being surplus verb; dropping of verb kāna and its nouns and predicates. Also we aim to explore various meanings of this verb which were indicated in the Qur’ān. Besides common use of past tense, present, continuous, future, addicted/renewed past tenses of this verb are used in the Qur’ān along with its sāra [صَارَ], continuity, necessity, and power meanings.
