APOSTASY CASES IN THE THIRD CENTURY OF CHRISTIANITY AND NOVATIANISM
Öz
Novatianism was a early Christian
movement which was formed around Novatian (d. 258) and considered heretical and
schismatic by the Catholic Church. Therefore, the Novatianists became the
target of the Church's criticism. Basically they were critisized because of
their view about readmission of lapsi (apostates) into the Christianity and
establisment of different kind of church. However, objectivity of church’s
criticism about Novatian and Novatianism, can be questioned. In this paper, Novatian
and Novatianism were briefly introduced and Church’s objectivity about them was
discussed. As a conclusion, it was figured out that both Novatianists and some
teologians which represent Catholic Church had some inconsistencies.
