FROM ARCHITECTURE TO RELIGIOUS SERVICES: APPLYING “UNIVERSAL DESIGN” PRINCIPALS ON RELIGIOUS SERVICES
Öz
Universal Design is a design concept of all products, environments and information systems which aims to be accessed, understood and used by the broadest possible spectrum of human ability regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. Universal design puts high value on both diversity and inclusiveness. The name father of Universal Design is Ronald Mace, who challenged the conventional approach of designing for the average user and provided a design foundation for more accessible and usable products and environments. Mace and his colleagues developed the definition of Universal Design. This definition is used by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University: "the design of products and environments to be usable to the greatest extent possible by people of all ages and abilities". Not long after, the universal design principals are applied on education. The practice of universal design in education considers people with a wide range of characteristics in the design of all educational products and environments. The aim of Universal design in education is providing a philosophical framework for the design of a broad range of educational products and environments. These include computer and science labs, curriculum, libraries and other student services. Needs of disabled people are not be composed of environmental and educational designs. Disabled people have a considerable amount of social and psychological problems and needs. Religious services have a potential to serve disabled people as a strong supporter in social and psychological aspects. This study presents an idea about applying “universal design” principals on religious services.
