This article aims to identify perceptions and attitudes of students
toward courses given under the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies
who study in Faculties of Theology. For this purpose, a survey was conducted
with 6097 students in Faculties of Theology across Turkey. According to main
findings of this survey, it has been observed that students hold negative
attitudes for the courses mentioned above because of prejudices that they
carried out from high schools or they had in the beginning of their
undergradute studies. However, after taking those courses and getting closer to
their graduation, it seemed that they altered their negative attidues to
positive ones. This result clearly showed that their negative attitudes did not
arise from the courses itself or their contents or the students who had no idea
about them in the first year but from external sources than the Faculty of
Theology itself. Though identifying those external sources exceeds the limits
of this article, we point out to investigate them with different works in the
future. Another proposal of this article is that there is an unavoidable need
to link philosophy courses with the courses of the Department of Islamic
Studies in addition to the necessity of philosophy courses in Faculties of
Theology for the sake of students’ progress and output during their
undergraduate studies.
