A University Campus Experience On Adaptation To The "Smoke Free Outdoor" Regulation
Öz
Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate compliance with the regulation of tobacco free zones by observing people smoking outside of the library and the adult hospital both inside the campus of a university hospital.
Material and Method: This descriptive study was carried
out by observing 4415 people using tobacco outside of Hacettepe University
Sıhhiye Campus Adult Hospital and Institute of Health Sciences Library between
13th-17th of March, 2017. Written official permission was obtained from the
institution. For data analysis, SPSS 15.0 was used.
Results: Gender distribution in the study was
31.9% female, 68.1% male. 13.7% of the observed group were health personnel.
35.5% were using tobacco inside the tobacco free outdoor zone and 64.5% were using
outside of the zone. 21.9% of people using tobacco outside the adult hospital
and 80.8% outside the library were in the tobacco free zone. People using
tobacco alone, used it 1.37 times more (%95 CI 1.17–1.59, p<0.001) than
people in a group and people using tobacco outside of the library used it 15.2
times more (%95 CI 12.7–18.2, p<0.001) than people outside the adult
hospital in the tobacco free zone.
Conclusion: Environmental tobacco smoke or
second-hand smoke which is an important problem for public health, does not
have a safe level of exposure. For this reason, controlling risk of exposure is
only possible by defining outdoor sites completely free of all tobacco
products. To combat environmental tobacco smoke, tobacco free outdoor policies that
include hospital or education sites should be implemented and efforts on
behavioral improvement against tobacco use are needed.
