A force dynamics account of derivations of polysemous Turkish verbs: the case of çek- and tut-

Öz

Force Dynamics is a theoretical framework that seeks to explain interactions between entities with regards to force (Talmy, 1981; 1983; 1985; 1988; 2000). It acts as a generalization for the causative structure and deals with not only physical but also psychological and social interactions. The goal of this research is to explain the derivational process of polysemous Turkish verbs within the framework of Force Dynamics through the derivations of the verbs çek- and tut-. These verbs were chosen due to their semantic features which denote some form of force application on another entity and were analyzed through a corpus-based approach. It was found that the derivation of Force Dynamics features happened in ways of; the derivation of end point from physical impingement, the derivation of force relation through concrete conceptualization of abstract from physical impingement, the derivation of instrument from physical impingement, the derivation of physical Agonist through concrete conceptualization of the abstract from physical impingement, the derivation of physical impingement from physical impingement and the derivation of psychophysical relation (the influence of the mind on the body)/Divided Self (the division of the mind into two separate aspects) from physical impingement.
