A Study on Speech Language Pathologists’ Awareness of Selective Mutism

Yıl 2022, Cilt: 5 Sayı: 1, 23 - 41, 29.04.2022

In cases of selective mutism which is primarily an anxiety disorder, parents of the children can also apply to speech language pathologists for information and therapy. In addition, when selective mutism is accompanied with bilingualism, speech delay, language and / or disorder, the children should also receive speech and language therapy. Therefore, speech language pathologists can play an important role in the management of selective mutism. In this study, it was aimed to examine the speech language pathologists’ awareness of selective mutism. The study includes 92 speech language pathologists working in Turkey. The data of the study were collected online through a questionnaire developed by the researchers. The results showed that speech language pathologists had incomplete and incorrect knowledge about selective mutism, the awareness of the pathologists did not change according to gender, educational level and year of experience, but the awareness of the pathologists who had worked with a child with selective mutism was higher. The findings were discussed in line with the literature, and suggestions for implementation and further research were presented.
