Alterations in Pupil Diameter Including Photopic, Mesopic, and Scotopic Vision When Not Under the Influence of Alcohol in Alcohol Use Disorder

This retrospective study compared photopic, mesopic, and scotopic pupil diameters in individuals diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) who were not under the influence of alcohol, with healthy controls. The AUD group showed significantly larger pupil diameters in both eyes under all lighting conditions (p<0.05). There were no age differences between groups, but BPRS, GGT, MCV, and APRI values were significantly higher in the AUD group. Alcohol units per year positively correlated with GGT, MCV, and APRI, and negatively with BPRS scores. No significant correlation was found between alcohol units/year and pupil diameters. The findings suggest that even in the absence of acute alcohol effects, individuals with AUD exhibit increased pupil size, which may impact iris recognition systems. The study highlights a potential long-term alteration in autonomic function related to chronic alcohol use. Limitations include its retrospective design and the inability to verify e-nabiz medical records, warranting further prospective research.
