Dijital Kültürün Yeni His Yapısı: Cunk on Earth Belgeselini Metamodernizm Üzerinden Okumak

Öz

Kültüre tarih boyunca geleneksel toplumlardan postmodern döneme kadar çeşitli işlevler ve özellikler yüklenmiştir. Global krizlerin yaşandığı, gündelik yaşamın, anlamın ve duygu dünyasının dönüşmeye başladığı dijital dönemde kültürel içeriğin de farklılaştığı ve bu yeniliği postmodernizm üzerinden algılamanın giderek zorlaştığı görüşü yaygınlaşmıştır. Yeni dönemde özellikle Batılı toplumların yeni kültürel mantığını kavrayabilecek kapsayıcı bir kültürel teoriye ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu noktada metamodernizm kavramı öne çıkmaktadır. Günümüz kültürel eğilimlerini anlamak için ortak bir dil önerisi olan metamodernizm mevcut dönemin kültürel mantığı olma nok tasında potansiyel taşımaktadır. Metamodernizm özellikle güncel kültürel ürünlerde izlenmektedir. Cunk on Earth (2022, Christian Watt) belgesel dizisi de bu yeni kültürel mantığın güncel ve yaygın örneklerinden biri olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Dolayısıyla çalışmada bu yeni kültürel kuramın ilgili belgesel üzerinden nasıl görünüm kazandığını saptamak hedeflenmiştir. Tematik analiz yöntemiyle yürütülen araştırmada; metamodern kuramın özellikleri ile belgesel dizisinin onu metamodern kılan biçimsel ve içerik özellikleri irdelenmiştir. Tematik analiz yöntemiyle incelenen belgeselin, metamodernizmin on iki metodunun on birine uygunluk gösterdiği ve kuramın önerdiği yöntemleri tamamen uyguladığı saptanmıştır. Metamodern bir kültürel eserin barındırması gereken yeni anlam ve deneyim inşasına doğrudan uyum gösteren dizinin empatik özdüşünümsellik, çift çerçeveli anlatı, ironiyet, meta sevimlilik ve salınım temalarını yoğun biçimde içerdiği görülmüştür. Analiz sonucunda metamodern bir kültürel eser olarak kabul edilen belgeselin mevcut dijital çağın normale ve sıradana atfettiği değeri, ürünün üreticisi ve alıcısı arasındaki deneyim yakınlaşmasını ve postmodernizmin ardından duyguya, hisse ve anlama dönüş çabasını yoğun biçimde somutlaştırdığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Özetle milenyumla birlikte bireyin his yapısında yaşanan dönüşümü karşılama girişimi olarak öne çıkan metamodernizmin, Cunk on Earth belgeselinde doğrudan somutlaştığı sonucuna varılmıştır.

The New Sense Structure of Digital Culture: Reading the Documentary Cunk on Earth Through Metamodernism

Öz

Throughout history, culture has been ascribed diverse functions and characteristics, from traditional societies to the postmodern era. In the current digital age, marked by global crises and the transformation of everyday life, meaning, and emotional structures, cultural content has also undergone significant change, making it increasingly difficult to interpret this novelty through the lens of postmodernism. Consequently, there is a growing need, partic ularly in Western societies, for an encompassing theoretical framework capable of articulating this new cultural logic. Within this context, the concept of metamodernism emerges as a compelling paradigm, offering a shared interpretive language for understanding contemporary cultural tendencies. The documentary series Cunk on Earth (2022, Christian Watt) exemplifies this emergent sensibility, providing a fertile case through which to explore the metamodern structures of meaning and affect. Employing thematic analysis, this study examines how the series embodies the formal and semantic features that render it metamodern. The findings reveal that Cunk on Earth aligns with 11 of the 12 methodological principles proposed by metamodern theory, particularly those concerning empathic reflexivity, the narrative double frame, ironesty meta cuteness, and oscillation between opposites. As a cultural artefact of the digital era, the series materialises metamodernism’s core pursuit the reconstruction of meaning, sincerity, and affect following postmodern fragmentation while foregrounding the renewed value attributed to normality, ordinariness, and emotional proximity between the producer and audience. Ultimately, Cunk on Earth embodies metamodernism as a response to the millennial shift in individual sensibility and the broader affective reorientation of the contemporary age.
