Historical Notes on Total Solar Eclipses in Turkey

Astronomical data indicate many solar eclipses occuring over Turkey throughout the past centuries. Ottoman documents and scientifi c literature provide limited information regarding Sun eclipses in the Middle East. Did Ottoman astronomers observe Sun eclipses for scientifi c purposes and record them? If so, did the results of these observations provide grounds for scientifi c works? The present article brings together historical notes collected to date, as a part of a study aiming to clarify the above queries. It fi rstly addresses the initiatives of an governor of Trebizond on the Black Sea, eager to raise funds from the Ottoman government to attract and host astronomers for the observation of the total solar eclipse that took place on August 21, 1914. No Turkish team, however, conducted observations in Trebizond. The total sun eclipse of June 19, 1936 was observed from Uludağ (Mt. Olympus ad Bythina), Bilecik and İnebolu by the teams of the Kandilli Observatory (Istanbul), the newly founded Astronomical Institute of Istanbul University, and the Doubarassy Observatory in Bessarabia. There were a number of other European astronomers who made observations at Uludağ and Bilecik as well. The measurements and observations of the Istanbul University team proved fruitless because the time was not correctly set and thus the longitude of Bilecik, which was one of the objectives, could not be determined. Prior to the solar eclipse, Fatin Gökmen, the director of the Kandilli Observatory made the necessary calculations and published them in a booklet, which is the only Turkish scientifi c publication made on the solar eclipse of 1936. The team of the Kandilli Observatory also made meteorological and physical mesurements on the Uludağ on the days following the solar eclipse. The total eclipse could not be clearly observed at Inebolu because of weather conditions. Despite these mishaps, the observation of a total solar eclipse and performing measurements were undoubtedly a unique experience for the team members.

TÜRKİYE’DE GÜNEŞ TUTULMASI GÖZLEMLERİ ÜZERİNE TARİHSEL NOTLAR

Öz

Astronomik verilere göre geçtiğimiz yüzyıllarda Türkiye’den çok sayıda güneş tutulması izlenmiştir. Ancak Osmanlı dönemi tarihsel kayıtları, bu tutulmalar hakkında sınırlı bilgi içermektedir. Söz konusu tutulmalar Osmanlı astronomları tarafından gözlemlendi mi, kayıt altına alındı mı? Gözlemlendiyse hangi sonuçlar çıkarıldı, bu sonuçlar eserlere konu oldu mu? Bu makale, bu soruları yanıtlama hedefi yle başlanan bir çalışma sırasında toplanan notları içermektedir. Makale esas olarak 21 Ağustos 1914 tarihli tam güneş tutulması münasebetiyle Trabzon valisinin teşebbüsleri ile 19 Haziran 1936 tam Güneş tutulması sırasında Uludağ, Bilecik ve İnebolu’da yapılan bilimsel gözlem ve ölçümleri konu almaktadır. Bu üç yerde sırasıyla İstanbul Kandilli Rasathanesi, Istanbul Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi Astronomi Enstitüsü ve Dubasari Rasathanesi (Besarabya) ekipleri gözlem yapmışlardır.
