Th e studies about the descent of man could be able to be placed exactly on a scientifi c ground in the nineteenth century. Ernst Haeckel was accepted prominent in science * Yrd. Doç. It was requested from Haeckel to make a speech in the International Zoology Congress in England in 1898, and Haeckel made a speech including the present knowledge of contemporary studies about the descent of man. In his speech, Haeckel made remarks about the biological characteristics of man and the status of man in the primate order, which was based on the developments of paleontology, comparative anatomy and phylogeny. Th e study, which drew great interest in the science community, was translated to Turkish by Ahmed Nebîl in 1911 with the title of İnsânın Menşe’î Nesl-i Beşer. In this study, fi rst of all scientifi c and philosophical thoughts of Haeckel will be mentioned briefl y, and then the importance of the translation of Ahmed Nebîl in the History of Turkish Anthropology will be discussed and the transliteration of the İnsânın Menşe’î Nesl-i Beşer will be presented

Ahmed Nebîl ve İnsânın Menşe’î

Öz

İnsanın kökenine dair çalışmaların tam bir bilimsel zemine oturması 19. yüzyılda mümkün olmuştur. Bu konudaki düşünceleri ve eserleriyle dönemin bilim çevrelerinde öne çıkan isimlerden biri de Ernst Haeckel’dır. 1898 yılında İngiltere’de düzenlenen Uluslararası Zooloji Kongresinde Haeckel’den bir konuşma yapması istenmiş, o da dönemin mevcut bilgilerinden yararlanarak insanın kökenine dair bir bildiri sunmuştur. Bu bildiride Haeckel, paleontoloji, karşılaştırmalı anatomi ve filojenideki gelişmelere dayanarak insanın biyolojik özellikleri, insanın primat takımı içindeki yeri üzerine değerlendirmeler yapmıştır. Bilim çevrelerinde son derece önemli görülen ve farklı dillere çevrilen bu metin, Ahmed Nebîl tarafından 1911 yılında İnsânın Menşe’î Nesl-i Beşer başlığıyla Türkçeye kazandırılmıştır. Bu çalışmada öncelikle Haeckel’in bilimsel ve felsefi görüşlerine değinilecek, ardından Ahmed Nebîl’in çevirisinin Türk antropoloji tarihindeki önemi kısaca değerlendirilecek ve metnin transliterasyonu verilecektir
