What Does Th e “Sense Of I-Ness” Correspond To In A Mental Domaın?

Öz

It is commonly known among philosophical circles that David Hume cast doubt on the existence of “self ” and thought of what we call “I” as a “bundle of perceptions.” Although there are some justifi ed introspective reasons to doubt the existence of “self ” or what we call “I,” this paper draws attention to the fact of “sense of I-ness” that all sane and conscious subjects constantly experience, and stresses on the impossibility of denying the experiencing of this “sense of I-ness.” In this regard, the paper investigates the defensibility of the following theses: (1) Th e “sense of I-ness” is an illusion; it refers to nothing in the mind, nor outside the mind. (2) Th e “sense of I-ness” is not an illusion, but it does not refer to any substantial existence either. (3) Th e “sense of I-ness” refers to something substantial in the mental domain, and this substantial being ontologically has a material/physical character. (4) Th e “sense of I-ness” refers to something substantial in the mental domain, and this substantial being does not have a material/physical character ontologically. Th is paper attempts to show that the fi rst two approaches cannot be defended and the third one faces problems that cannot be resolved, but conversely, the fourth one is strategically the most defensible and progressive approach

Zihinsel Alanda “Ben Hissi” Neye Karşılık Gelir?

Öz

David Hume’un “kendilik”(self ) olgusunu inkârı ve “ben” dediğimiz şeyi bir “algı demeti” olarak kurgulaması felsefi çevrelerde yaygın olarak bilinmektedir. Bu makale “kendilik” ya da “benin” varlığını yadsımanın bir takım haklı gözlemsel gerekçeleri olsa bile bilinçli öznelerin mütemadiyen deneyimlediği bir “ben hissi” olgusuna dikkat çekmekte ve bu hissi yadsımanın imkânsızlığına vurgu yapmaktadır. Bu minvalde “ben hissi” ile ilgili şu olası savların savunulabilirliğini araştırmaktadır: (1) “Ben hissi” bir yanılsamadır, ne zihnin içinde ne de zihnin dışında hiçbir şeye işaret etmemektedir. (2) “Ben hissi” bir yanılsama değildir, fakat tözel bir varlığa da işaret etmemektedir. (3) “Ben hissi” zihinsel alanda tözel bir varlığa işaret etmektedir ve bu tözel varlık materyal/fiziksel bir ontolojiye sahiptir. (4) “Ben hissi” zihinsel alanda tözel bir varlığa işaret etmektedir ve bu tözel varlık materyal/fiziksel olmayan bir ontolojik statüye sahiptir. Makale, bu savlardan ilk ikisinin savunulamazlığını ve üçüncü görüşün başa çıkamayacağı problemlerle yüz yüze olduğunu temellendirmeye çalışmakta, buna karşılık dördüncü görüşün stratejik olarak en savunulabilir ve ilerlemeci görüş olduğunu iddia etmektedir
