What Does Th e “Sense Of I-Ness” Correspond To In A Mental Domaın?

Öz

It is commonly known among philosophical circles that David Hume cast doubt on the existence of “self ” and thought of what we call “I” as a “bundle of perceptions.” Although there are some justifi ed introspective reasons to doubt the existence of “self ” or what we call “I,” this paper draws attention to the fact of “sense of I-ness” that all sane and conscious subjects constantly experience, and stresses on the impossibility of denying the experiencing of this “sense of I-ness.” In this regard, the paper investigates the defensibility of the following theses: (1) Th e “sense of I-ness” is an illusion; it refers to nothing in the mind, nor outside the mind. (2) Th e “sense of I-ness” is not an illusion, but it does not refer to any substantial existence either. (3) Th e “sense of I-ness” refers to something substantial in the mental domain, and this substantial being ontologically has a material/physical character. (4) Th e “sense of I-ness” refers to something substantial in the mental domain, and this substantial being does not have a material/physical character ontologically. Th is paper attempts to show that the fi rst two approaches cannot be defended and the third one faces problems that cannot be resolved, but conversely, the fourth one is strategically the most defensible and progressive approach
