Words or Things: What do the Categories of Aristotle Classify?

There are some questions and problems have to be answered in front of the scholars who show an effort to understand The Categories which is accepted as the first book of Aristotle. One of the important question is that what categories is classified? The other one is that although the title of the work is Categories, Aristotle has used “kategoria” as the translation of category only twice in the work. So the first question which has to be answered, is why the work has known today with such a title; another question is what is classified under this title? In other words, ten categories taken over the question of ti estin, have to be accepted as a result of a linguistic classification or an ontological classification? Many commentators give different answers to this question; does the classification signify words, names or beings classified by these words, names or both of these explanations can be accepted? In this context the article tries to cover the basic thesis of these different views. Since the ontological explanation has been seen more acceptable among others, a detailed examination of Categories will try to be put forth within this view

Aristoteles’in ilk eseri olarak ele alınan Kategoriler’i inceleme çabası içinde olan yorumcuların önünde sorulması ve cevaplanması gereken temel sorunlar bulunur ki bunlardan en önemlisi kategorilerin neyi sınıfladığıdır? Bir diğer sorun ise eserin başlığının Kategoriler olmasına rağmen Aristoteles’in eserde bu kavrama karşılık gelen Grekçe “kategoria” kavramını yalnızca iki kez kullanıyor olmasıdır. O halde öncelikle cevaplanması gereken ilk soru neden böyle bir başlıkla eserin günümüzde biliniyor olduğu; diğer bir soru ise bu başlık altında neyin sınıflandığıdır? Diğer bir deyişle, ti estin (nedir?) sorusu üzerinden ele alınanları sınıflayan on kategori dilbilgisel bir sınıflamanın mı yoksa ontolojik bir sınıflamanın mı sonucudur? Bu soruya pek çok yorumcu farklı cevaplar verir; ya sözcükler, isimler ya bu sözcüklerin, isimlerin gönderme yaptığı varlıklar sınıflanır ya da söz konusu olan her iki alana dair olan bir sınıflamadır. Bu bağlamda makalede söz konusu farklı görüşlere dair temel tezler ele alınacaktır. Fakat Kategoriler’in bir varlık sınıflaması olduğu açıklaması diğerleri yanında daha kabul edilebilir görüldüğünden bu görüş üzerinden Kategoriler’e dair detaylı bir inceleme yapılmaya çalışılacaktır
