Transition Process From Alchemy to Chemistry in the Ottoman Empire

Öz

Turkish alchemy, follows the tradition of alchemy dating back to zosimos and developed by jaber b. Hayyân. In this tradition, material and spiritual elements of alchemy are together. Besides the studies and works of Hayyân, those of Ali Aydemiroglu el-Cildeki (d. 1363), who placed the emphasis on the applied aspect of alchemy, played an important role in the formation of the Ottoman alchemy tradition. The best-known figure of the Ottoman tradition of alchemy is Ali Celebi of İznik (1609?). Celebi is the follower of Hayyân, Ebû Bekr el-Râzî (Rhazes) and Cildeki. His Works contain the material and spiritual elements of alchemy. Also with the effect of Ali Celebi’s theoretical and applied studies and works, 16th and 17th centuries passed very actively. Tradition of Ottoman alchemy interacted with the tıbb-ı cedid (new medicine) movement in the 18th century and affected the medicine. One of the significant representatives of this movement was Omer Şifai of Bursa. The first important representative of chemistry, gaining independence from alchemy, is Başhoca İshak Efendi. He is succeeded by such chemists as Chemist Derviş Pasha and Aziz Bey of Crimea. Our study is based on primary sources and as such, it is intended to reveal the Turkish-Islamic cultural elements that affected the transition process of alchemy
