Laughter is on the Side of Society: Henri Bergson’s Interpretation of Laughter

In this study, my aim is firstly to reveal the answer that Bergson gave to the question “What means laughter?” Bergson’s answer to this question is that laugther is a social gesture. For Bergson, inclinations that are incompatible with social life is punished and corrected through laughter. Therefore, laughter has a useful function for society. However, when Bergson examined laughter, he has only examined the laughter that is caused by comic, he didn’t mention the other situations that cause to laughter. Furthermore, Bergson, by saying that laughter has a useful function for society, that addresses the laughter only from the perspective of society, he didn’t mention other aspects and negative functions of laugther. For this reason, Bergson’s laughter theory doesn’t give any comprehensive theory about laughter. It also leads us to the idea that laughter, by punishing and correcting inclinations that are incompatible with social life, has an assimilating function on the differences in society

Kahkaha Toplumdan Yana: Henri Bergson’un Gülme Yorumu

Öz

Bu çalışmadaki amacım, öncelikle Henri Bergson’un gülmenin ne anlama geldiği sorusuna verdiği yanıtı açımlamaktır. Bergson’un bu soruya verdiği yanıt; gülmenin toplumsal bir jest olduğudur. Bergson için, gülme aracılığıyla toplumsal yaşamla uyumsuz eğilimler cezanlandırılır ve düzeltilir. Bu nedenle gülmenin toplumsal bir işlevi vardır. Ancak Bergson, gülmeyi ele alırken sadece komiğin neden olduğu gülme üzerinde durmuştur, gülmeye neden olan diğer durumlardan söz etmemiştir. Ayrıca Bergson gülmenin toplum için yararlı bir işlevi vardır diyerek gülmeye sadece toplum perspektifinden bakmıştır, gülmenin başka yönlerinden ve olumsuz işlevlerinden söz etmemiştir. Bu nedenle Bergson’un gülme kuramı gülmeye dair kuşatıcı bir bilgi vermemektedir. Ayrıca, gülmenin toplumsal yaşamla uyuşmayan eğilimleri cezalandırması ve düzeltmesi, gülmenin toplumdaki farklılıklara karşı asimile edici bir işleve sahip olduğu fikrine de bizi götürmektedir
