The Nature of ‘Poetic Art’ and Its Rational Limits in Aristotle

Öz

Aristotle examines the art of poetics or poetry in his work, Poetics. This philosophical study is the first philosophical inquiry on art, and Aristotle in this study which he specially treats poetry, in contrast to his teacher Plato, owns poetry, poets; he tries to show the importance and value of poetry via human nature; and he thinks that there are natural and necessary reasons direct people to write poetry. According to Aristotle, the main reason to bring poetry naturally into existence is that people have natural tendencies to deal with mimetic activities starting from childhood and get pleasure from things related to mimesis. Aristotle discusses the relation of mimesis and pleasure with a certain “aesthetic appreciation” and “understanding/learning” on this basis. For example, he ties Homer’s success in poetry to his natural ability; to successfully bring the plot together, again he has based pleausure from an art work that we do not know yet, on its mastery and form. On the other hand, he also mentions that when we contemplate a work of art, we enjoy this work because of our previous recognition about it. Aristotle’s different approaches to the relation of mimesis and pleasure have led interpretes like S. Halliwell, M. F. Heath, G.R.F. Ferrari to make different readings. Halliwell puts Poetics’ intellectualist, rationalist reading in the foreground, while Ferrari makes a pure aesthetical reading. Our aim in this work is to address and draw attention to these intriguing controversies that are tied to the natural and rational limits of Aristotle’s Poetics
